Using a Chest Expander

1) Chest expanders come with elastic cables and steel spring cables.  I prefer elastic cables, as spring cables can pinch skin in many exercises.  Otherwise, both are quite acceptable to use, just pick the one you prefer.

2)When using a chest expander, the idea is fatigue the muscles with the rep range, but not hit failure.  As you gain in strength, you can add reps gradually.

3) For the normal person looking to stay fit, two bands to start is just fine.  If you can't do the listed rep range of an exercise with two bands, just use 1 band.  When enough strength has been gained, you can then add another band.  But make sure that you are ready for a second band, as the resistance can be very very strong.  These are not like weights that you can add small amounts of resistance.  Chest expanders typically add a good amount of resistance for each band added.

4) Breathing IN on the exertion part of the exercise and breathing OUT on the return movement will help focus on keeping the chest expander controlled, as well as hit the "negative" phase of the movement, which will tax the muscles in new ways.
